  • The Iowa Community Corps positions are highly physically engaged positions; applicants should find satisfaction in working with their hands in productive, efficient ways. Members will work outdoors in a healthy team environment, where they can think creatively, problem-solve, assist in leading programs and volunteers, exercise their bodies, and feel accomplished.

    Daily tasks will include, but are not limited to: 

    • Seeding in fields and greenhouse

    • Irrigation setup and maintenance

    • Cultivating mechanically and by hand

    • Harvesting, washing, storing, and packing produce

    • Cleaning post-harvest handling facilities, tools, and equipment

    • Assisting with maintaining farm records

    • Actively working with community partners to distribute food grown on the farm

    • Food Safety 

    • Attending educational sessions

    • Other duties as assigned

  • Qualifications

    The position requires the ability to perform and endure repetitive physical tasks and movements on a regular basis. Members must be comfortable with: 

    • Bending and twisting motions

    • Crouching/kneeling 

    • Pulling/pushing carts and wagons 

    • Standing for long periods

    • Walking long distances over the farm

    • Lifting and carrying 40 lbs at a time

    • Working in inclement weather for the duration of a shift, including extreme temperatures, precipitation, wind, and so on

    • Other similar physical activities

    It is essential that Members: 

    • Possess a valid driver’s license or state ID

    • Maintain open and constant communication with the Farm Operations Team 

    • Establish positive relationships with community members, staff, other apprentices, and volunteers, working collaboratively with others

    • Be able to work and talk at the same time 

    • Work quickly and efficiently

    • Maintain awareness of safety when performing any tasks 

    • Bring enthusiasm and open-mindedness to learning new skills and subject matter 

  • The Iowa Community Corps Member program offers a stipend to support members during their service. Members are expected to work 33 hours/week for 10-weeks from mid-May through August. Americorps must be available most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from  7:00am-1:00pm each week to participate in volunteer and educational activities. Schedules are semi-flexible and can be coordinated weekly with the Farm Operations and Training Manager. 

    Stipend Details:

    • Living allowance: $3,945

    • Education Award: $1,565.08

    • Access to Member Assistance Program which includes: 24/7 telephonic mental health counseling, medical advocacy, legal advice, financial advice, life coaching

    There is an option for a 450-hour placement if members are interested. This would extend into the fall.
