EDUCATION PROGRAMS

CAN YOU DIG IT

“Can You Dig It?” is a no-cost farm and garden experience designed for youth and teen groups and organizations who are eager to connect with food and community.

This is a three part program where you can come out to Grow: Johnson County throughout the year to work with apprentices and staff on our 5 acre farm, located in Iowa City, Iowa.

  • Part 1: Starting Seeds with Ease. We will learn how to select which plants to grow, when to start seeds, and how to take care of them.

  • Part 2: Planting, Sowing, and Growing in the Garden. Let’s get creative and practice growing food. We will learn about diverse garden designs and farm practices and start planting seeds and transplants.

  • Part 3: Harvest Celebration! Harvesting food you grow is a powerful act! What we grow together, we celebrate together! We’ll harvest seasonal vegetables and enjoy tasting them, too.

Not able to join us at the farm? “Can You Dig It?” can also happen at community and school gardens!

We are flexible with scheduling and programming depending on the needs of youth, teens, and organizations interested in partnering with us!  “Can You Dig It?” hours can count toward volunteer programs like ICCSD’s Silvercord.

At Grow: Johnson County we are working towards a just and sustainable food system in community with young leaders. Reach out to us to explore the possibilities!
